Many pillows claim to have the ultimate solution to back and neck muscle pain. But which ones really work (if any)? We put them to the test.
I spent many years just sleeping on any old pillow I happened to pick up at the store. It worked fine for me. Or so I thought. Despite suffering from regular neck and back pain after sleeping, I never made the connection with my pillow. Then a friend told me about her ergonomic pillow, and what a difference it had made to her. I realized that I require a specific type of pillow. But with so many options out there claiming to help, which would be best for me?
I spend a lot of time researching various types of pillows to find which ones were most popular, and which seemed to get the best (and worst) reviews. To thoroughly test them, I narrowed the list down to 9 pillows, looking at:
It was an unusual 3 months, to say the least. But my experiment was successful – I found what I was looking for and now my sleep is longer, deeper and I wake up rested.
All the pillows were good. Except one. The Derila Contoured Ergonomic Pillow – It was the pillow I slept on. I found that the shape was ideal, providing support and a ‘neck nook’ that stopped me from rolling around and getting store and stiff overnight. I definitely woke up feeling much better rested with this pillow.
As with anything, the cheapest options are usually a compromise in some way. I actually haven’t included the very cheapest options into the list, because in my experience they simply won’t give you the support you need to reduce neck and back pain.
Cheap pillows will usually be filled with poor quality memory foam that doesn’t feel supportive, doesn’t hold its shape or mold to your body properly. They’ll also usually be underfilled and often actively uncomfortable. Even if they feel supportive at first, they’re unlikely to last as long as a more expensive, better quality pillow, saving you more money in the long run.
You might also want to consider what a good quality, supportive pillow means to you. If better sleep and less pain means you’re able to focus harder on work and be more productive, your pillow could even make you money back. If you’re on a tight budget, look out for discount deals. At the time of writing, the winning pillow (Derila) was on offer at a 70% discount, for example. I also saw that you could get a discount by getting a bundle of two or more pillows, which you can give as gifts later.
The Derila pillow is designed specifically to reduce back and neck pain. And I found that it really did work, and did the job better than any other pillow I tested. The contoured shape helped keep my neck and back aligned, so I was able to wake up pain-free.
The memory foam was really supportive and high-quality, and molded well to my shape. It’s CertiPUR-certified, unlike the EPBAO (which is a visually similar pillow, but without the quality of the Derila).
One of the manufacturers’ big selling points is that this pillow is good for side, back and front sleepers, and I found that to be true. I sleep on my side and back, and both were comfortable. I’m not a front sleeper, but I can see how it would work if you were: the contouring is shaped just right to give you that support in any position.
This was the only pillow I tested that helped reduce snoring significantly (which kept my partner happy!). Many ergonomic pillows claim to reduce snoring, but most don’t do it that effectively. However, the Derila pillow does. I think it’s because it aligns your neck and back, as misalignment can be a cause of snoring.
One downside is that the Derila might feel a little on the small side for some. It worked well for me, but if you prefer a larger pillow, the Zymme might suit you better (it’s a very similar pillow in many other ways except size).
I also found that (though it is breathable), it was a little hot to sleep on (as were the other memory foam pillows on the list), but you can get a cooling cover to go with it, which I’d recommend.
The bottom line is that this pillow distinguishes itself from other pillows in 3 ways.
You’ll see from the pictures that the pillow works pretty nicely in different sleeping positions. Of all the pillows I tested, this is the one that I think is likely to work for the greatest number of people, and reduce pain regardless of how you sleep.
There is a 30-day refund period too, so you can try it out and see if it’s right for you. I’ve been using it for around several months now, and I’ve found it to be ideal for me.
